A lot of people try podcast repurposing for 60 days and quit. The episodes are going out. The posts are landing. And the download numbers haven't budged. No new enquiries. Nothing visible has changed. So they stop. 😩

Almost always at exactly the wrong moment.

The wrong benchmark

Download numbers are the wrong thing to measure here. Repurposing isn't a listener acquisition channel... there are better tools for that, as we covered a few weeks back. What it does is keep you visible to the people already in your world, consistently enough that when they're ready to hire someone or refer a client, you're the person they think of.

That mechanism doesn't register in Spotify stats. It registers in your business: the discovery call that starts with "I've been following you for a while," the DM from someone who's been reading your content for two months, the referral from a peer who shared a post and made an introduction. None of that is tracked by any analytics dashboard.

What's actually happening during those 60 days

When nothing visible seems to be occurring... when it looks like the repurposing isn't working... here's what's actually happening underneath:

  • Show notes are being indexed by Google. But search indexing takes three to four months before it starts generating real traffic. The work is happening. The return is delayed.

  • The warm audience is reading more consistently. But they were already warm. They needed more time before they were ready to reach out.

  • Cold visitors are landing on your profile. They're not enquiring yet, not because the content isn't working, but because they haven't been exposed to enough of it to feel ready.

  • The referral is forming in someone's head. They've been seeing your content. The right conversation hasn't come up yet. It will.

All of that is real activity. It just doesn't look like anything in month two. 📊

When the compounding starts

Around month three, the picture shifts. The Google traffic begins. The person who found a caption in month one has now listened to several episodes and is finally ready to reach out. The referral happens from someone who shared a post and thought of you when a client mentioned they needed exactly what you do. The show notes start pulling in people who were actively searching for the expertise you have and happened to find it.

The people who quit at 60 days miss all of this. Every single time.

What to actually track in the meantime

If download numbers aren't the right benchmark, what is? Here's what actually signals that something is building:

  • Profile visits trending upward over time

  • Time people spend on your website

  • Replies to newsletters (especially from people you don't recognise)

  • DMs from people who've been following quietly

  • Comments that reference specific episodes

  • Discovery calls that start with "I've been following you for a bit" rather than "so what do you do?"

Those are the leading indicators. They show up before the enquiries and revenue do. Three to six months of properly executed repurposing before the compounding becomes clearly visible. That's the realistic timeline. And it's worth staying the course for.
